Bomb shelter R. 1118 was located underground between Carrer de la Duana and Carrer d’Ocata, listed in 1937 as one of the more than 1,300 built in Barcelona during the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939). Most of them, including this one, were built by the people to protect themselves from the terrible fascist bombings that decimated the city from early 1937 until the city fell on 26 January 1939. The elderly, women and children helped build the shelter in a show of social and technological effort that would be praised by Winston Churchill himself during the Nazi bombings of England in 1940.
